Biography

Jim Grizzell has over 30 years’ experience providing student patient education, academic teaching, campus health and wellness programs, and leading and assisting with national college health strategic planning and programs. Experience is in assessing student and campus health issues, developing, implementing and evaluating of cost-effective university and worksite wellness programs. He is an adjunct faculty member at Contra Costa Community College teaching “Education for Healthful Living” which has students 15 to 63 years of age.

Other recent experience has been as a contractor assisting the development of social marketing programs and train civilian health educators for the US Air Force Surgeon General’s Office in Washington, DC. While in DC he worked with the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Department of Energy health promotion and CarMax programs. He was an adjunct faculty member for George Washington University’s School of Public Health and Health Services.

For over 16 years he directed the health promotion program and taught academic courses for Cal Poly Pomona. Courses included consumer health, stress management and social marketing. Previous work includes directing Chevron Oil Company’s first employee wellness program, a Johnson & Johnson site employee wellness program and managing a health club for Brunswick Corporation.

Highlights of his work include awards for service and research, and national service. At Cal Poly Pomona the Health Promotion Department received was a Southern California Auto Club award for a program which reduced 21st birthday binge drinking. He was named Outstanding Staff, Staff Emeritus and honorary life member of the Associated Students, Inc. He chaired and co-chaired the task force which developed Healthy Campus 2010 (www.acha.org/healthycampus). He was awarded Fellow in the American College Health Association. He was on the Centers for Disease Control Community Guide (www.thecommunityguide.org) Worksite Committee which conducted a systematic review of research and determined the effective components of employee wellness programs (www.thecommunityguide.org/worksite/ahrf.html).

Jim has a bachelor’s degree in business administration, master’s degree in exercise science, and MBA. His certifications include Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES, www.nchec.org) and American College of Sports Medicine Health/Fitness Instructor (ACSM-HFI, www.acsm.org). He took the very first HFI exam in 1982 and has certificate #17. While with the Air Force he became a CDC Train the Trainer Past for CDCynergy Social Marketing. Certifications have been as a National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and ACSM Exercise Test Technologist. He has been on and continues work on ACHA committees which created the National College Health Assessment (www.acha-ncha.org), Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education (www.acha.org/Publications/docs/Standards_of_Practice_for_Health_Promotion_in_Higher_Education_May2012.pdf), Guidelines for Hiring Health Educators (http://www.acha.org/Publications/docs/Hiring_Health_Promotion_Professionals_in_Higher_Ed_May2014.pdf). He is the treasurer for the Pacific Coast College Health Association.

Jim is a health fitness role model for regular physical activity, stress management, healthy eating and healthy relationships and networking. He has been an almost daily fitness runner (some races though) for over 40 years, tries to include at least two days per week of strength training following the ACSM Adult Fitness guidelines, and does cycling and swimming several times per week.

The course covers over 20 health and success topics including stress management, relationships, infectious diseases (i.e., cold/flu, sexually transmitted infection), nutrition, fitness, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, sexual assault and violence prevention, campus safety. This course is a requirement for graduating with an associates degree.
